Great artical by Sherry St. Germai

To all the mothers who push their kids to practice……I salute you.

My mom and I have many memories of epic screaming matches.  Red faces, over dramatic tears (mostly by me) and regretful words blurted out in the heat of an argument.  If only someone had told me, “One day you’ll look back on this and it will be funny…. I promise.” Ha-ha!  To this day I still thank my mom for being the beautiful blonde, angelic music disciplinarian that she was……..not only is she an amazing human being inside and out, but she’s an amazing teacher.

And for all you teachers out there, the way to master something truly is through teaching.  The will to learn something because you love it far outweighs the will to learn something because you’re forced to.  However, if this deep groove (discipline) is worn into a child’s brain at a young age (once rebellion wears off….. and it will), it no longer becomes an act of will.  You’ve given your child the best gift of all….another language, MUSIC.  They become fluent, their minds expand to the highest degree and the more vocabulary they have, the more styles and theory they learn, well…. the greater conversation they will have later on in life….. musically. Daughters love your Mothers. Yep…Mama actually does know best.  Believe it or not I’m 29 and she still does.  I have a successful career in music which I owe entirely to the lady who took me out of school regularly to practice and compete in festivals.  She always took me clothes shopping if I won….what a great incentive. Mothers discipline your daughters (and sons) and don’t feel bad.  Just remember when the fights get to be too much…. say to yourself and to your daughter

One day you’ll back on this and it will funny….. I promise.”
